Peptides - The Anti-Aging Powerhouse

One of the most important anti-ageing ingredients in skincare is peptides. They are short chains of amino-acids that link together and form proteins – thus they aid as building blocks for your skin. Just like elastin, collagen and keratin, they are present in small amounts within our bodies but with age, they start depreciating and thus need to be replenished.

What do Peptides do for our skin?

Peptides are essential foundations for skincare as they provide resilience, firmness and texture. When applied topically, they are highly beneficial to the skin as they act like tiny messengers aiding skin cells to produce more collagen. Collagen peptides are formed and will constitute up to 80% of the dermis layer of the skin. They keep the skin smooth, firm and hydrated – which explains why I love to recommend adding it to anti-ageing skincare routine.

As we all know, collagen is a vital ingredient that helps in keeping skin radiant, youthful and firm. But with age and environmental factors, the production of collagen in our bodies start declining. Collagen Peptides' vital proteins used in combination with key ingredients and of course, healthy lifestyle habits will help in gaining your youthful glow back. In short, peptides are powerhouses that are instrumental in the production of collagen in your skin. No peptides would mean no collagen and that would in turn lead to tired and lifeless skin!

Types of Peptides

While there are hundreds of peptides out there, there are three specific ones that are key in anti-ageing skincare. Understanding collagen peptide benefits and incorporating them into the daily skincare regimen is key to realizing the magical benefits to your skin.

Peptides can be taken orally or applied topically. Topical peptides are mainly classified into the following:

  1. Carrier Peptides – like Copper Peptides and X-50 Myocept. They are wonderful skin elasticity boosters that help in carrying trace elements like manganese and copper. They also help in healing wounds in our bodies.
  2. Neurotransmitter Inhibitor Peptides – like XEP- 30 and Palmitoyl Tripeptide – 38. These work almost like botox on our skin clearing out wrinkles and fine lines caused by effects of expressions. They also inhibit muscle contraction in our bodies.
  3. Enzyme Inhibitor peptides – like Trylagen and Trifluoroacetyl tripeptide -2. These peptides work on inhibiting the enzymes that break down collagen thus maintaining the levels of the same in our bodies.

Out of all, Copper peptides are considered to be the most powerful and popularly used in skincare products. This arises from the fact that copper is already present in our bodies and is considered the building blocks of our skin. Copper peptides are effective anti-oxidants that have skin restoring properties. These not only help in promoting the production of collagen and elastin but also glycosaminoglycan which supports the production. In short, they aid both in generating as well as supporting levels of collagen in our bodies and are absolutely the anti-ageing peptide I swear by.

  • Katie has been my aesthetician for almost 20 years and she is the best in the city! I do not easily give recommendations but I make the exception in this case. There were occasions when I tried other establishments but they were lukewarm, expensive and too retail oriented. Katie’s professionalism and genuine care for her clients makes her a standout. She is thorough and does the difficult (and sometimes painful!) work. I am confident that she will only suggest what I need and what is best for my skin. She remains current with the trends and technology in skincare and goes the extra mile to ensure she provides the best service. Her generosity and genuine nature is striking. She treasures her clients and will keep this client for as long as there is a space in her book for me!
